Annual Report on Drinking-water Quality for New Zealand

What is the Annual Report?

Annual Report cover

Every year, the Ministry of Health undertakes an Annual Review of networked drinking-water supplies to see if they have achieved the drinking-water standards and met the requirements of the Health Act for the past 12 months.

The survey is carried out by ESR for the Ministry, using the WINZ (to 2017) or the new Drinking Water Online database to gather the information from water suppliers and District Health Boards. The data is collected for around 650 supplies, audited by DWAs, validated, analysed and reported to the Ministry, a process that takes several months.

The Ministry in turn examine the report and discuss issues with interested parties. The report is then published on the Ministry website.

Data is gathered for a 12 month period and is typically published within 12 months of the end of the period.

For example, for the 2015-2016 reporting period:

  1. Period reviewed: 1 July 2015 to 30 June.2016.
  2. Data collection and validation: July and August 2016.
  3. Analysis & report preparation: To December 2016
  4. Report published: April 2017.
